Replacement Bathtubs

Replacement bathtubs are used for a variety of reasons. These replacements can be in a number of different styles, shapes and sizes. There are some special considerations when choosing a replacement bathtub in order to get the best installation and finished product.

Reasons for Replacing Bathtubs

The most common reason for bathtub replacement is to get rid of an old, damaged or stained bathtub. Refinishing a bathtub is a huge job that sometimes requires the services of a professional. It may just be easier to replace the bathtub altogether. There are situations, also when the tub is beyond repair and simply needs to be replaced.

Some bathtubs are replaced even when they are still in good condition. This is often because of dated colors or out of style colors. Many colored bathtubs are replaced with a more neutral color of white or biscuit to better match a larger number of décor color schemes. Updating the style of the bathtub may be in order as well. In an ultra modern home, an old style claw foot tub may need to be replaced to compliment the décor.

Special Considerations for Replacement Bathtubs

Searching for a replacement bathtub is a little different than searching for a bathtub for a new construction project. For a replacement, correct measurements are more critical as the new bathtub will need to fit into a space previously occupied by a bathtub. It is also important to take into consideration the measurements of doorways and hallways to ensure a new bathtub will fit not only in the space within the bathroom, but also through the areas it needs to travel to get to the bathroom.

Aside from the size of the space for the new tub and the size of the doorways accommodating the newly purchased replacement bathtub, plumbing locations need to be thought through. The simplest way of handling this part of the replacement is to purchase a replacement tub that is set up to accept plumbing on the same end as the current bathtub. Otherwise, all plumbing will need to be relocated. Be sure to keep in mind that the plumbing applies to the faucet, fixtures and drain.

Replacement Bathtub Materials

Bathtubs come in a variety of materials, all of which are readily available in the market today. You may find that you want to replace that old cast iron or porcelain tub with a lightweight acrylic bathtub, or you may want to replace the acrylic bathtub with an upgraded copper tub. Whatever the case, various materials are available and each has their own benefits.

Acrylic is lightweight and generally inexpensive while cast iron is durable, long lasting but higher priced. Copper is a very high priced material for bathtubs but is also a very clean metal prohibiting the growth of bacteria and fungus.

As long as the measurements are the same and the plumbing lines up with the new replacement tub, the project is a relatively simple and quick way to change the overall look of your bathroom.
